Bookmark and Share

Well New Orleans Modern Drunkards, it is the first week of 2010 and we some of us are wondering what is going on now that the Saints have a bye week and there are no New Years Eve and Sugar Bowl festivities. Well don't Fret!! This week has some interesting events that will intrigue and entertain you all while enjoying some great libations.

So during the Week of 1/05/10 - 1/11/10 this is our Tuesday Top 5:

#5) Beth Patterson is playing at Yo Mama's Bar & Grill on at 727 St. Peters St at 8:00pm on Tuesday, January 5th

#4) Necro Hippies are playing for the Louisiana "Books 2 Prisoners" Benefit at the Allways Lounge on 2240 St. Claude Ave at 10pm on Saturday, January 9th

#3) Clockwork Elvis is playing for "Elvis' 75th Birthday Party" at Rock 'N' Bowl at 3000 S. Carrollton Ave at 9pm on Friday, January 8th

#2) Times Picayune Columnist Chris Rose will be performing his "A**HOLE Monologues" at the Hi-Ho Lounge at 2239 St. Claude Ave at 8pm & 10pm on Saturday, January 9th

and for our #1 this week....

#1) Anthony Bourdain is coming to the Mahalia Jackson Theater at 801 N. Rampart St. at 7:30pm on Thursday, January 7th

Anthony Bourdain will be coming to New Orleans again but this time, he isn't here for his "No Reservations" tv show. Rather, he is here as part of the inaugural year of the New Orleans' Speaker Series. Dubbed the cooking world's "Bad Boy", he will be here for one night only. Of course he will be promoting his show and his best selling books: Anthony Bourdain's Les Halles Cookbook: Strategies, Recipes, and Techniques of Classic Bistro Cooking & Kitchen Confidential Updated Ed: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly (P.S.). But also while here he will be talking about his adventures in food, cocktails, cooking, and of course his amazing travels.

The Tickets for this One Night Only Show are around $38 - $60 and there is a a special VIP Ticket that comes with a Meet & Greet with Mr. Bourdain that is $125.

After his show, expect the urge to smoke crumpled up cigarettes & drinking high octane cocktails at your favorite dive bar.

Top 5 Tuesday - Week of 12-29-09

Bookmark and Share

Happy New Years New Orleans Modern Drunkards. It's our Top 5 Tuesday and this week is obviously packed with parties, drinking, and events. So we are going to share what we feel are the top 5 events this week. Now there are plenty of private parties but why pay a hundred dollars or more for a stuffy bar in the french quarter that you can go to on friday for free.

So during the Week of Christmas 12/29/09 - 1/04/10 this is our Tuesday Top 5:

#5) Rebecca Barry is coming in from Mobile to play her sax and sing at Dos Jefes Uptown Cigar Bar at 10pm on Friday, January 1st.

#4) Johnny J and the Hitmen will be playing at Clever Wine Bar from 7pm - 10pm on New Years Eve, Thursday, December 31st at the Pre-Bonfire Bash in Mid-city & it's FREE!!

#3) A Champagne Tasting & Benefit for the Louisiana Cystic Fibrosis Foundation called Uncork the Cure, will be happening at the Republic New Orleans. The $40 admission will cover samples of Champagne and Sparkling Wine from Republilc National and food from some of the city's favorite restaurants all while you help a great charity. The event is from 8pm - 11pm on Tuesday, December 29th.

#2) Fast Times New Year’s Eve Prom will be going on at One Eyed Jack's starting at 9pm on New Years Eve, December 31st with only a $10 entry for ages 21+ and $15 for ages 18-21. Come and Toast the new year with the champagne of beers: $1 Miller High Life.

and for our #1....

#1) Better Than Ezra will be playing Live at the House of Blues New Orleans starting at 8pm on Wednesday, December 30th.

Better Than Ezra is one of Louisiana's own favorite bands & these boys can rock. Therefore, we recommend them playing Live at the House of Blues New Orleans as our #1 pick of the week. Many of us may own Better Than Ezra Music but no recording can entirely capture the "live show" experience that they offer. They will also play another show on New Year's Eve, although this concert maybe more expensive since they are offering an open bar. However, an open bar at the house of blues maybe a bit to crowded and tiresome for our desires.

and finally......

#1) Sunpie Barnes and the Louisiana Sunspots playing at Dos Jefes Uptown Cigar Bar at 10pm on Saturday, December 19th.
If you have never seen Sunpie Barnes & the Louisiana Sunspots, then you need to get down there on Saturday night and check out his show. I would recommed getting out there as close to 10pm if you want to sit down and the bar will be packed not only with cigar smokers enjoying great cocktails, but also fans of Sunpie singing his own style of blues, zydeco, Afro-Caribbean, and Afro-Louisiana music. As Sunpie squeezes out his famous tunes like the "Lah Lah Song" & my personal favorite "Bunny Bread", grab a nice cigar and sit back and relax with a chimmay or a sazerac.

New Orleans Modern Drunkards

Bookmark and Share

Hi, my Name is Eric Gamble & I had been stuck in a rut with the same old adult beverages. Everytime I would go to a bar I either order a Jack Sour (a whiskey sour with Jack Daniels), a Chimmey (a belgium beer), or just a regular beer. While most would people say that this is just you finding comfort in life, I disagree because I live in New Orleans where drinking is a great social experiment combined with unbelievable history and adventure.
Thus, I have been inspired by a great book that I recommend to anyone looking for interesting cocktails and history. This book, that came to inspire me, is an interesting look into the world of drinking called the Modern Drunkard by Frank Kelly Rich. The Modern Drunkard offers today's befuddled drinkers a comprehensive and instructive manual on how to drink-and how to do it well. This book campaigns to revive the lost art of tippling and taps a deep vein of boozy lore and legend through the ages, uncovering etiquette and expertise from some of history's greatest guzzlers.
Thus came an idea to create a social drinking club and a webshow in honor of this book and a great cocktail lifestyle found in our great city of New Orleans. The New Orleans Modern Drunkards blog and Webshow is a brainchild that was brought to life by my neighbors and several close friends who all are also in search of a new drink. In an attempt to expand our booze knowledge and a social activity, we had created a new society dedicated to the art of mixology. Each gathering, webshow, or adventure will spotlight a particular libation, a New Orleans location, history, education, and other wonderful Modern Drunkard tips. The name of the game is creativity & fun. However, this is not a puke-in-your-shoes-pass-out-in-the-gutter kind of gig. We're a classy society or will pretend to be one.
So what will you find in this Blog? Well everyday we hope to follow a theme:
Monday - Modern Drunkard Mall Review: Here we will review a product, books, music, booze, ingredients, apparel, & drinking paraphernalia
Tuesday - Top 5 Tuesday: Here we will announce the top 5 things to do with a Cocktail in New Orleans this week!
Wednesday - Where Are We Wednesday??: On Wednesdays Some of the Modern Drunkards will be out enjoying a few libations. We will post up a few clues and if you can find the Modern Drunkard out, we will by the first 2 people to approach us with the secret word or phrase a drink!
Thursday - Thirsty Thursday: On Thursdays, we will post up a New Cocktail recipe that we feel is worth drinking
Friday - Fun Facts Friday: Friday will allow us show the world that we just aren't a group of pretty pieces of meat but we have brains too. We plan on giving you definitions, history lessons, famous quotes, and tips found in Frank K. Rich's Modern Drunkard.
Saturday - Saturday Sauce Spotlight: As the New Orleans Modern Drunkards, we would be amiss to not share with you some of the hottest alchohols and beers that can be found in stores and bars within this magnificent city.
Sunday - Nothing: even the Lord rested on this day so give us a break won't ya!!
